Sumitomo Group

Sumitomo Group |住友グループ|Sumitomo Gurūpu is one of the largest keiretsu , founded by Masatomo Sumitomo .

History

The Sumitomo group traces its roots to a bookshop in Kyoto founded circa 1615 by a former buddhist priest, Masatomo Sumitomo . Considered its spiritual founder, even today management of the group is guided by his "Founder's Precepts", written in the seventeenth century.

It was copper that made the company famous, however. When Riemon Soga , Masatomo Sumitomo's brother-in-law, learned purportedly Western methods of copper refining, he established a smelting business in 1590. This he named Izumiya , literally meaning " spring shop". The advanced techniques Riemon perfected allowed extraction of silver from copper ore, something which Japanese technology had as yet been unable to accomplish.

While the smelting & smithing business began in Kyoto, by the late 1600s it was moved to Osaka , and Soga passed control of the company to his son Tomomochi who managed its transformation into a major trading house during the Edo period . Sumitomo began exporting copper, importing silk, providing financial services, and by 1691 copper mining had been added as a business, too.

The Meiji Restoration allowed Sumitomo to import and utilize Western machines and techniques in its mines. Sumitomo soon branched out into even more business areas entering the machine and coal industries, as well as the forestry, banking and warehousing businesses becoming a zaibatsu , or business conglomerate.

Emblem

The diamond-shaped igeta mark is reminiscent of a type of frame placed over a well in premodern Japan and was the logo of Riemon Soga's Izumiya company.

WHAT'S NEW

Introducing…

SUMIMARK® IV Thermal Transfer Marking System

The SumiMark® IV is a feature-rich, high performance thermal transfer marking system designed to print on continuous spools of SumiMark tubing materials. Its new design provides excellent reliability and optimum ease of use. The SumiMark IV produces a dry, permanent mark which can be handled as soon as it is printed. After recovery, printed SumiMark sleeves meet the exacting MIL-spec mark permanence requirements for abrasion and solvent resistance. The combination of the SumiMark IV printer, SumiMark tubing and SumiMark ribbon provides a unique, high quality marker printing system.

NEW MECHANICAL AND DESIGN FEATURES:

• Smaller frame conserves space and allows for easy mobility and placement.

• Freestanding spool assembly with 360 degree RFID reader assures uninterrupted spooled tubing supply.

• 203 dpi print head ensures reliability and high quality text, graphics and barcodes.

HARDWARE

All hardware components are made from high tensile strength aluminum and designed to provide years of service. State-of-the-art electromechanical innovations assure consistent print quality and long term reliability. The SumiMark IV includes a fully integrated in-line cutter which can provide full cutting or partial cutting for kitting purposes.

SOFTWARE

The SumiMark IV integrated software is designed to be compatible with Windows 2000, NT 4.0 and XP. This software allows users to easily create text markers, graphics, logos, standard barcodes and sequential alpha or numeric markers. Scanned images, bitmaps or any true type font or style can be use to create customized markers. The SumiMark software accepts ASCII, tabdelimited and Excel files for automatic conversion to wire lists for on-line processing or for placement in various project archives. Wire list files can be created, modified and saved from various locations then printed to the machine.

CAPABILITIES

Unlike pre-formatted products, the SumiMark IV can be programmed to create markers from 0.25” to 29” long in 0.01” increments with no content restrictions. Alpha and/or numeric information can be automatically incremented or decremented as single or multiple markers.

Up to 2 simultaneous sequences per marker file can be created. Individual marker length can be set by the user to minimize tubing waste. The software automatically determines the number of characters and lines in a marker based upon tubing size and length plus font and point size set by the user.

TUBING AND RIBBONS

The SumiMark IV printer uses SumiMark tubing which is available in a wide variety of colors and sizes ranging from 1/16” to 2”. SumiMark tubing meets military and commercial specifications (AMS-DTL-23053 and UL224/CSA) respectively. Marked sleeves meet the requirements of SAE AS81531.

SumiMark Ribbons are available in a variety of colors and are specifically formulated to provide an instantly dry and permanent mark. All SumiMark tubing and ribbon products are RoHS compliant for minimal environmental impact.

COMPANY PROFILE

Origins of Sumitomo

Masatomo Sumitomo The Sumitomo business was started in Kyoto, the historic capital city of Japan, nearly 400 years ago by Masatomo Sumitomo (1585-1652) and Riemon Soga (1572-1636). Masatomo is regarded as the spiritual founder of the Sumitomo Group. Following an early career in the Buddhist priesthood, he established a shop in Kyoto that sold medicines and books. In accordance with custom of the time, Masatomo produced written teachings for his household and disciples. One volume of these, which provided advice on conduct of commercial activity, has been come to be known as the "Founder's Precepts" and is the basis of the code of conduct for the Sumitomo Group of companies.

Riemon, who was a disciple and brother-in-law of Masatomo, was the technological pioneer who set the Sumitomo business on the path to commercial success. Having studied copper refining, Riemon established the Izumiya copper business in Kyoto in 1590. Until the late 16th century, Japanese copper merchants did not possess the technology to extract the silver contained in copper ore, which compelled them to export the ore with silver intact. By learning and perfecting western smelting methods, Riemon engineered a revolution in Japanese copper refining. The Sumitomo business was continued by Riemon's eldest son, Tomomochi (1607-1662), who entered the Sumitomo family through his marriage to Masatomo's daughter. Tomomochi moved the copper smelting business to Osaka, Japan's commercial capital at the time.

Copper Refining Process

One of the epoch-making events in the early days of the Sumitomo family was the 1690 opening of the Besshi Copper Mine on the island of Shikoku, across the Seto Inland Sea from Osaka. The Besshi Copper Mine was extremely productive and profitable right up to the early 20th century. Consequently, it played a pivotal role in the birth of many core companies of the Sumitomo Group today.

In 1891, Sumitomo formulated its Business Principles, which are based upon the "Founder's Precepts" by Masatomo. Article 1 explains the necessity of acting in good faith in order to maintain the other party's trust. Article 2 urges that social trends should be studied in order to meet social changes with active responses. Article 3 advises against being attracted to easy profits or hastily drawing to the promise of profits before fully investigating the commercial viability of ventures.

The emblem of Riemon Soga's original business, Izumiya (izumi "spring" and ya "shop"), and many Sumitomo companies today is an igeta, a frame placed around a well in premodern Japan. The igeta symbolizes sparkling water gushing constantly from a fountainhead, which forms a mighty river before flowing into a vast ocean.
